The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said:
“If any of you is struck with a calamity; then let him remember his calamity with me [i.e. my death], for indeed it is the greatest of all calamities.”
Authenitcated by Imaam Al-Albaanee in As-Saheeha: 1106
Surely, all other calamities –are sorrowful- but they can not be compared to the magnitude of that.
By Allaah, ask yourself: how many times have you remembered and contemplated that our beloved one (sallahAllaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has passed on?
By Allaah, ask yourself: how many times have you cried when you remember this great calamity?
In explaining this hadeeth. Al-Haafidh ibn Abdulbarr said:
‘And surely he (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) has said the truth, for indeed the calamity by him is greater than any other calamity which can befall a person –after him- upto the Day of Judgement, due to the revelation being cut-off, and the Prophethood dieing.”
At-Tamheed: 19/322.
Al-Allaamah al-Munnaawee in his book Faydhul Qadeer, explaining this hadeeth:
(The text of the hadeeth is in brackets and its translation is bold, the explanation –with its arabic text- comes below every portion and it is not bold.)
It says:
“If any of you is struck with a calamity; then let him remember,
Meaning: let him remember
his calamity by me
Meaning: By my disappearance from this Ummah, and the cut-off of the revelation and the heavenly re-inforcement.
for indeed it is from the greatest..
And in another narration: From the most severe…
…of all calamities.”
Rather surely it is the greatest of all of them,
by the proof of the narration in Ibn Maajah:
‘There is no one from amongst my Ummah who would be stricken with a calamity –after me- which is more severe to him than my calamity.”
Faydhul Qadeer sharh Jaam’i as-Sagheer: 1/368. Daarul Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1994. Checking of Ahmad Abdussalaam.
And Allaah knows best.
