وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ السَّعِيرِ
5. And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps, and We have made such lamps (as) missiles to drive away the Shayâtin (devils), and have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire.
وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ
6. And for those who disbelieve in their Lord (Allâh) is the torment of Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.
إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ
7. When they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath as it blazes forth.
تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ كُلَّمَا أُلْقِيَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ
8. It almost bursts up with fury. Every time a group is cast therein, its keeper will ask: “Did no warner come to you?”
قَالُوا بَلَى قَدْ جَاءَنَا نَذِيرٌ فَكَذَّبْنَا وَقُلْنَا مَا نَزَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلا فِي ضَلالٍ كَبِيرٍ
9. They will say: “Yes indeed; a warner did come to us, but we belied him and said: ‘Allâh never sent down anything (of revelation), you are only in great error.'”
وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ .
10. And they will say: “Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!”
TAFSEER:
Meaning we have made…
{ السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا }
The heaven (sky) of the earth…
That which you see and is nearest to you
{ بِمَصَابِيحَ }
..With lamps
And these are the stars; in their varying degrees of illumination and brightness.
Surely if it was not for what it contains of the stars; it would have been a dark ceiling; with no beauty and no attractiveness to it.
But rather Allaah has made these stars as an adornment for the sky, and as a light and a source of guidance of which people tread upon in the darkness of the lands and in the seas.
And the fact that He has informed us that He has adorned the sky of the earth with these stars, this does not negate the reality that the stars are physically not in the lowest heaven; rather they are in the upper heavens, but due to the fact that the heavens are transparent; thus the light of these stars adorn the sky even though they are not physically in the same level.
And We have made these lamps..
{ رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ }
Missiles to drive away the devils..
Those who want to steal some of the news of the skies. So Allaah has made these stars as guards for the heavens from the devils getting any of the information. So these meteors which are shot from among the stars; Allaah has prepared them in this world for the devils ..
{ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ }
..and We have prepared for them
In the here-after…
{ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ }
…the torment of the blazing Fire.
Because they have disobeyed and been rebellious to Allaah, and have led astray His slaves. And because of this; those who follow them among the disbelievers are just like them: Allaah has promised them a tormenting punishment. And because of this He said:
{ وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ }
And for those who disbelieve in their Lord (Allâh) is the torment of Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.
That which disgraces its people in the utmost form of degradation.
{ إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا }
When they are cast therein,
In a state of disgrace and ignominy…
{ سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا }
they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath..
Meaning: a loud and scary sound..
{ وَهِيَ تَفُورُ }
..As it blazes forth.
{ تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ }
It almost bursts up with fury.
Shaykh al-Shanqeetee says [1] : This is like the statement of The Exalted in Suratul Furqaan: 12
{ إِذَا رَأَتْهُمْ مِّن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُواْ لَهَا تَغَيُّظاً وَزَفِيراً }
When it (Hell) sees them from a far place, they will hear its raging and its roaring.
Shaykh as-Sa’dee continues to say:
Meaning: Due to its severity, it almost eats up each other when it combines, and it almost bursts forth; due to its extreme anger on the disbelievers.
Hence what do you think it’s actually going to do to them?
Then He mentioned the reprimanding of its care-taker towards the people who are in it. He said:
{ كُلَّمَا أُلْقِيَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ }
Every time a group is cast therein, its keeper will ask: “Did no warner come to you?”
Meaning:
On this condition of yours of deserving the Fire, it is as if you were not warned about it?
{ قَالُوا بَلَى قَدْ جَاءَنَا نَذِيرٌ فَكَذَّبْنَا وَقُلْنَا مَا نزلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلا فِي ضَلالٍ كَبِيرٍ }
They will say: “Yes indeed; a warner did come to us, but we belied him and said: ‘Allâh never sent down anything (of revelation), you are only in great error.'”
Thus they combined between their specific denial, and their general denial of rejecting all that which Allaah revealed. And as if that was not sufficient for them; until they announced that the prophets and warners are misguided while in fact they are the guided ones who guide others! And they were not sufficed by claiming that the prophets are just misguided only; rather they claimed they are “in great error.”
So what kind of oppression and arrogance is similar to this?
Imaam Ibn Katheer said:
Allaah reminds of His Justice towards His creatures, that indeed He does not punish anyone except after establishing the proof against him, and after sending of a Messenger to them. Just as He said:
{ وَمَا كُنَّا مُعَذِّبِينَ حَتَّى نَبْعَثَ رَسُولا }
..And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (to give warning).[2]
{ وَقَالُوا }
And they will say:
Recognizing their lack of them being on guidance and on the straight path..
{ لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ }
“Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!”
And thus they denied for themselves the path of guidance, and that is: listening to that which Allaah revealed and that which the Messengers came with, and having an intellect which benefits its owner and facilitates him to the reality of matters, and treading upon good and disparaging all that which opposes it : and thus they had no listening and no intelligence.
Opposite to the people of certainty and goodness, and the owners of truthfulness and Eeman (belief) ; indeed they strengthened their Eeman by:
– The audible proofs, thus they listened to that which came from Allaah and that which the Messengers of Allaah came with.
A listening of knowledge, understanding, and action [upon what they heard].
– The intellectual proofs: and this is the realization [and differentiation] of guidance from misguidance, and good from despicable, and right from evil.
And they – in terms of their level of Eeman – are according to what Allaah has granted them of following that which is has been transmitted and that which is proven by the intellects.
So Glorified and free from Imperfections is He , who specifies by His favour who He wants, and benefits who He wants from His slaves, and lowers the one who is not befitting of good.
Allaah The Exalted says regarding those who enter Hell; recognizant of their oppression and their deviance
{ فَاعْتَرَفُوا بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ }
Then they will confess their sin. So, away with the dwellers of the blazing Fire.
Meaning: Away with them and loss for them, and miserable are them.
So how miserable and how lowly are they! Such that the reward of Allaah has passed them; and they have become those who dwell the blazing fire, that which flares up their bodies and reaches into their chests!
