TAFSEER OF VERSE 22
{ أَفَمَنْ يَمْشِي مُكِبًّا عَلَى وَجْهِهِ أَهْدَى أَمَّنْ يَمْشِي سَوِيًّا عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ }
22. Is he who walks without seeing on his face, more rightly guided, or he who (sees and) walks on a Straight Way (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism).
Meaning: Which of the two is more guided?
The one who is wandering in darkness, immersed in kufr (disbelief) , his heart has been turned : such that to him truth has become falsehood, and falsehood has become truth?
Or the one who is knowledgeable of the truth, acting upon it, treading upon the straight path in his actions, his statements, and all his situations?
So by just looking at the conditions of these two people; the difference between them is realized, and the guided one is distinct from the deviated.
And the actual situation of matters is a greater witness than words.
In his tafseer Suyootee brings a narration from Qataada that he said in his tafseer of this verse what means:
‘It is the disbeliever who used to disobey Allaah; hence Allaah resurrected him on his face, while the believer used to do the acts of obedience thus Allaah resurrected him upon obedience.’ [1]
This is also affirmed that this will be their condition in the here-after ; as in the hadeeth narrated in Bukhaaree and Muslim from Anas ibn Maalik that the Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) was asked as how will Allaah resurrect such people in such a condition,
So the Prophet replied – in what means:
“Is not He who made them to walk on their legs able to make them walk on their faces.”
TEXT OF VERSE 23-26
قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْشَأَكُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالأبْصَارَ وَالأفْئِدَةَ قَلِيلا مَا تَشْكُرُونَ
Say it is He Who has created you, and endowed you with hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts. Little thanks you give.
قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الأرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ
24. Say: “It is He Who has created you from the earth, and to Him shall you be gathered (in the Hereafter).”
وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
. They say: “When will this promise (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) come to pass? if you are telling the truth.”
قُلْ إِنَّمَا الْعِلْمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَا أَنَا نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ
26. Say (O Muhammad SallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam): “The knowledge (of its exact time) is with Allâh only, and I am only a plain warner.”
TAFSEER :
The Exalted says – clarifying that He is The Only One who is deserving to be worshipped- and also calling His slaves to thank Him, and to single Him out in worship:
{ قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْشَأَكُمْ }
Say it is He Who has created you,
He originated you from nothingness – without anyone helping or opposing Him.
And when He created you; He completed your existence by bestowing sight, hearing, and a heart: of which these are the most beneficial of all body parts, and He has also perfected the bodily strength.
But on top of these bounties…
{ قَلِيلا مَا تَشْكُرُونَ }
..Little thanks you give..
…To Allaah.
Few among you are thankful.
Little are the thanks that you realize.
Muqaatil said: ‘… meaning you don’t praise and thank the Lord of these bounties; such that you should worship Him alone..’ [2]
{ قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الأرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ }
Say: “It is He Who has created you from the earth, and to Him shall you be gathered.”
Meaning: He brought you forth from it, and established you on its surface, and He ordered you, and He prohibited you, and facilitated for you the bounties of which you benefit from: Then after that, He will resurrect you for the Day of Judgement.
But this promise of a day of rewarding; these disbelievers reject it…
{ وَيَقُولُونَ }
And They say:
In denial…
{ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ }
“When will this promise come to pass? if you are telling the truth.”
They made a condition for their truthfulness that they (the Prophets) should inform them of the appointed time of its coming.
And this is oppression and arrogance; because indeed its knowledge belongs to Allaah alone and no one else. And there is no connection between believing in this message [of Islam] and between knowing the exact appointed term, this is because truth is known by proofs. And Allaah has established the many proofs and signs which prove its authenticity; such that there does not remain any speck of doubt to those who have been favoured with a hearing [and an intellect], and this is witnessed.
Then after they had said this statement[s], Allaah ordered His Prophet (SallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) to reply to them, So He said:
{ قُلْ إِنَّمَا العلم عِندَ الله }
“The knowledge (of its exact time) is with Allâh only..
Meaning: The time when the Day of Judgement will be; its knowledge is with Allaah only and no one else. And this is like His statement:
{ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّي لاَ يُجَلِّيهَا لِوَقْتِهَا إِلاَّ هُوَ }
They ask you about the Hour (Day of Resurrection): “When will be its appointed time?” Say: “The knowledge thereof is with my Lord (Alone). None can reveal its time but He. [3]
Then He informed them that he was sent as a warner, and not as an informer of the unseen knowledge. So He said:
{ وَإِنَّمَا أَنَاْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ }
..and I am only a plain warner.”
I warn you, and I put fear in you regarding the consequences of your disbelief. And I make clear to you what Allaah has ordered me to clarify to you. [4]
